Loving till it hurts

I think love is one of the most misunderstood and misused words there is!

Today many people will declare their "love" in sloppy, soppy ways, but they have little more than a fascination with, and attraction to, the person.  They "fall in love" when they see someone they really feel drawn to, and fall out of love when they get used to the sight and company of that person, then buzz off to the next person.

When the Bible talks about love it isn't meaning something emotional or sentimental; it is referring to something volitional and sacrificial.  It is seeking the good of another, even at cost to yourself.  This is the way God has loved you.  He doesn't feel attracted to us - our sins are vile in His sight - but He chose to do us good anyway, and it was at infinite cost to Himself:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This is true love.  The Lord literally loved you till it hurt - He gave Himself to bear the punishment and pay the penalty for sin at Calvary's cross, and in His death God declares His undying love to you (Romans 5 v 8).

Don't refuse this love.  Acknowledge yourself to be unworthy of it, and receive this gift of love today - the Lord Jesus Christ.
