I'm good...?

It's one of those things that annoys the more easily annoyed among us - the influx of American phrases.  This means that when you enquire about someone's health you will sometimes hear the response "I'm good."  The fact is you aren't!

None of us is, according to no less an authority than the Son of God.  One day He met a young man who thought he was pretty good.  The Lord gave him this shocking news:
No one is good but One, that is God.

While the man to whom Christ was speaking had a standard of goodness that he met, he heard that day that God had a standard of goodness that he (and everyone else) missed.

This is why Paul said:
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

We all have missed the mark, and so we all need to give up hope of earning God's acceptance or entering heaven based on us being good, because we aren't good - we are guilty.  That's why our only hope is found in Christ - He paid the penalty for the guilty.  By turning to Him in repentance, and trusting Him for salvation, we go free.

So if you are asked how you're doing, don't answer "I'm good".  If you are speaking about your physical health the correct answer is "I'm well", but if you're speaking about your moral state the correct answer is "I'm guilty".  We all are, but Christ is the Saviour of guilty sinners, make Him yours today.
